Sushma Swaraj, leader of the opposition, speaks on the December 16th gang rape during zero hour and calls for capital punishment for those convicted. She adds that it is a shame that the chief minister, who is a woman, also sends out the message that women should not leave the house alone instead of improving law enforcement and providing justice. She raises questions about the Central government’s intentions for action.
Girija Vyas responds to Prakash Agrawal’s statement that this is a Delhi issue by saying it is a women’s issue primarily. She suggests that this case is getting more attention since women from all over the country come to Delhi for work. She continues to recommend paying attention to incidences of “eve teasing” and widening the definition of rape from “actual rape.” She recommended that police forces receive better training, starting self-defense and awareness training for the public, increasing security workers in public spaces and especially transportation and asked for fast track courts to be set up nationwide for sexual assault cases.
